Maschsee & Eilenriede - Green Hannover
Hannover is one of the greenest cities in Germany. This day combines the water of the Maschsee with the country's largest urban forest, the Eilenriede, the Stadtpark and the English garden grounds. Ideal for walking, jogging or cycling - nature in the heart of the city, entirely free of charge.
Best time to visit: April to October
Day 1
Water, forest and parks
We start at the Maschsee, walk through the Stadtpark and the Eilenriede and finish in the Georgengarten - Hannover's green axis in one day.
- 9:30 - 11:00
A lap of the Maschsee
Begin with a lap around the Maschsee (about 6 km, a good hour on foot). Open views over the water, sailors, rowers and the north shore looking towards the New Town Hall.
Tip: If you like, hire a bike and ride the lap in 20 minutes.
- 11:15 - 12:30
Stadtpark
From the Maschsee eastwards to the Stadtpark - a manicured park with a rose garden, water features and lawns, often used for events.
- 12:30 - 13:30
Lunch by the Eilenriede
On the edge of the Eilenriede there are excursion venues and beer gardens - for example around the Lister Turm. A good refuel before the forest walk.
- 13:45 - 16:00
The Eilenriede - the great urban forest
At 640 hectares, the Eilenriede is the largest urban forest in Germany. Shady paths, clearings, streams and playgrounds - a real forest in the middle of the city, almost twice the size of Central Park.
- 16:30 - 18:00
Georgengarten and the Herrenhausen avenue
To finish, the English Georgengarten with its wide meadows and the four-row lime avenue towards Herrenhausen - perfect for sunset.
- 19:00
An evening in the List
The List district around the Lister Meile offers relaxed venues and beer gardens - a fitting end to the green day.
