The Nanas by the Leine

The three "Nanas" - Sophie, Charlotte and Caroline - by the French artist Niki de Saint Phalle have stood on the Leibnizufer along the river Leine since 1974. The oversized, brightly painted and curvaceous female figures sparked fierce debate when first installed, but today they are a cheerful, much-loved part of the cityscape. They are named after notable women of Hannover. Niki de Saint Phalle was made an honorary citizen of the city in 2000.
