Herrenhausen Gardens (Great Garden)
The Great Garden at Herrenhausen is among the finest and best-preserved Baroque gardens in Europe. Laid out by the House of Welf from 1666 and brought to its present form under Electress Sophie, it impresses with its strictly geometric layout, hedge theatre, a maze and the Great Fountain, which shoots up to 80 metres high. The grotto designed by Niki de Saint Phalle is a colourful work of art. In summer the garden hosts illuminated water features and the international fireworks competition.
